One of the very first questions I ask every bride when she comes into my studio isn't…
"What colors are you using?"
or
"What flowers do you want?"
Instead, I ask:
"Tell me about your wedding day."
Because here's what I've learned…
Most brides don't actually know how many flowers they need—and that's completely okay.
How could you?
Unless you've planned a wedding before, you're suddenly expected to know what belongs at the ceremony, what belongs at the reception, how many centerpieces you'll need, whether you need aisle flowers, what a floral installation is, and somehow fit it all into your budget.
It's a lot.
Over the years, I've sat with brides who thought they only needed a bouquet and an arch. Others had every centerpiece planned but hadn't even thought about flowers for their sweetheart table or welcome display.
That's exactly why I wanted to write this article.
So grab your Pinterest board, your venue information, and let's walk through it together.
Let's Start With Your Ceremony
Your ceremony is where your marriage begins.
It's where your guests laugh, cry, and watch you become husband and wife.
It's also where many of your favorite wedding photographs will be taken.
Your Ceremony Backdrop
Whether it's a floral arch, broken arch, pillars, or another statement design, this is usually the biggest floral feature of your ceremony.
When you exchange vows...
When you share your first kiss...
When your families hug you afterward...
Your backdrop is there for every one of those moments.
If your budget allows for one larger floral investment, this is usually where I recommend making it.
Aisle Flowers
Some brides picture lush aisle meadows.
Others prefer simple floral markers.
Some choose nothing at all.
There isn't a right answer.
The important thing is choosing what fits your vision.
One thing I always tell my brides is this…
Those aisle flowers don't have to stay outside.
One of my favorite parts of wedding day is coming back after the ceremony and moving those flowers into the reception. Suddenly they're framing the sweetheart table, decorating the head table, or adding color around the dance floor.
It's one of the easiest ways to get more from your floral investment.
Ceremony Urns
Large floral urns create such a beautiful first impression.
They naturally draw your guests' eyes toward the ceremony and help frame the space.
Then, once everyone heads to cocktail hour, we can often move those urns inside to welcome guests into the reception.
It's like your flowers get to tell the story all over again.
Personal Flowers
These are the flowers you'll hold, wear, and treasure in your photographs for years to come.
Typically this includes:
• Bridal Bouquet
• Bridesmaids' Bouquets
• Groom's Boutonniere
• Groomsmen Boutonnieres
• Fathers' Boutonnieres
• Mothers' Corsages
• Grandparents
• Flower Girl Florals
These flowers may be smaller than your ceremony pieces, but they're some of the most meaningful because they're carried by the people closest to you.
Now Let's Talk About Your Reception
This is where most brides realize...
"Oh...I didn't even think about that."
And that's completely normal.
Sweetheart Table
If you're sitting at a sweetheart table, don't forget about it.
Think about how many photos you'll have sitting there together during dinner, listening to speeches, laughing with your new husband.
Flowers here help create one of the most photographed spots of your reception. I love to re-use the ceremony arch to frame the Sweetheart table.
Guest Tables
I probably answer this question every single week.
"How many centerpieces do I need?"
The answer depends on your venue, guest count, and table layout.
As a general guideline:
- An 8-foot round table usually looks beautiful with one larger centerpiece or 3–5 bud vases.
- A long harvest table typically needs 6–9 bud vases or a combination of flowers and candles to create balance down the table.
Here's another little design tip...
Not every table has to look exactly the same.
I actually love mixing larger statement centerpieces with lower floral designs throughout the room. It keeps your guests' eyes moving and gives the room much more character than rows of identical tables.
Cocktail Tables
They're easy to overlook because guests don't spend all evening there.
But during cocktail hour?
They're everywhere.
A simple bud vase or petite floral arrangement makes those spaces feel intentional without adding a huge expense.
Cake Table
Your cake deserves a little attention too.
You don't need an enormous arrangement.
Sometimes just a few blooms tucked around the cake or cascading beside it are enough to make those cake-cutting photos feel extra special.
Bar
This has become one of my favorite places to add flowers.
A floral bar arrangement creates such a fun focal point and becomes a natural gathering place for guests.
Welcome Display
This is the first thing your guests see.
A floral arrangement beside your welcome sign immediately tells everyone...
"You're in the right place."
It sets the tone before they ever take their seats.
Seating Chart
Another spot that's often forgotten.
Guests are already stopping here.
Why not make it beautiful?
Memory Table
Flowers have a way of making even the quietest spaces feel warm and meaningful.
A small arrangement beside photos of loved ones is a simple touch that says so much.
Where Should You Spend Your Floral Budget?
This is probably one of the questions I get asked most.
If your budget doesn't allow flowers everywhere—and honestly, most weddings have a budget—don't worry.
You don't need flowers on every surface to create a beautiful wedding.
If it were my wedding, I'd focus on three places:
✔ Your ceremony backdrop
✔ Your sweetheart table
✔ A few statement floral pieces in your reception
Those are the places guests naturally notice and where so many of your favorite photos will be taken.
Beautiful design isn't about having the most flowers.
It's about putting them in the right places.
My Favorite Wedding-Day Moment
Can I tell you a little secret?
One of my favorite moments isn't during the ceremony.
It's not even during the reception.
It's right after we're finished setting everything up.
The room is quiet.
The candles are ready.
Every flower is exactly where it belongs.
For just a few minutes before anyone arrives, I get to stand back and see everything come together exactly the way we envisioned during those first consultations.
Then I get to watch my bride walk into the room for the first time.
That look on her face...
That's why I do this.
So...How Many Wedding Flowers Do You Actually Need?
The honest answer?
It depends.
Your venue.
Your guest count.
Your vision.
Your priorities.
Every wedding is different.
That's why I don't believe in cookie-cutter floral packages.
When we sit down together at Lavish Bloom Rentals, we're not simply counting centerpieces.
We're talking about your wedding.
How you want it to feel.
Where your guests will spend the most time.
What will matter most to you when you look back at your photographs ten years from now.
Sometimes that means adding flowers somewhere you hadn't considered.
Sometimes it means realizing you don't need flowers somewhere you thought you did.
Either way, my goal is never to sell you more flowers.
My goal is to help you make thoughtful decisions so your wedding feels beautiful, intentional, and unmistakably yours.
Because at the end of the day...
Brides rarely remember exactly how many centerpieces they ordered.
They remember how they felt when they walked into the room for the very first time.
And that's the feeling I hope to create for every couple who trusts Lavish Bloom Rentals with one of the most important days of their lives.
